This may be more than a little late, but I figured I’d do a post on CONvergence. I did take some pictures from my experience, and I have two pictures by the wonderful Bryan Humphrey of my costumes. Those are below.
So first of all, this was my second time attending CONvergence. While it was slightly less fun than last year, I think that is probably do to the fact that the people who run CONvergence divided into two different groups between the 2009 and 2010, and that caused some planning issues. The biggest thing I noticed were the party rooms were somewhat lacking. For instance, there was no Tardis Tea Room, no Romulan Consulate, no Serenity Room, and no Ghostbusters Room.
The Smackdown was as good as ever. Smackdown is a panel on Thursday night that involves a panel of “experts” debating which character would win in a fight, and they go through several rounds giving often ridiculous reasons for their votes, and eventually a winner is crowned. This years theme was Super Villains, and after several rounds, the victor was The Master from the Doctor Who series. This was rather ironic, since one of the panelists was CONvergence Guest of Honor, Paul Cornell, a Doctor Who writer.
We didn’t make it to Villification Tennis this year, which was saddening, but we did get to see Tim Uren and his gang perform a hilarious skit called Macbeth: The Video Game Remix. Tim Uren, along with his pal Joe Scrimshaw, are basically the heart of CONvergence. They are both regulars on the Smackdown panel, and their small series Spooky Spooky Scary Scary is always aired on Sunday in the Cinema Rex.
It also felt like there were less costumes than usual this year. This was particularly noticeable during the LARP tournament in the Garden Court. Last year nearly every contestant was in costume and performed their fighting as their character would. This year most of the contestants were not in costume.
I went in costume this year. Thursday night I wore my black and white Amidala dress:

On Friday and Saturday night, I dressed as Leeloo from The Fifth Element.

That was really fun, dressing as Leeloo. I got a lot of people stopping me for photos, and it was particularly awesome because I was the only Leeloo there. Last year there were three or four of them.
Anyways, here are some more photos, mostly other people’s costumes, from CONvergence:
Indiana Jones

Knight in Armor

Jafar with Iago from Aladdin, and a Cybergirl (Doctor Who) on the side

Princess Leia’s Bounty Hunter disguise, Boba Fett, and Zam Wesell from Star Wars

The Spies from Spy vs. Spy

David Bowie’s Jareth from The Labyrinth

Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty

And the Connie Cake. Connie is the mascot of CONvergence…but this is Connie Mark II (the evil twin of Connie)
